Robert Adams is a Professor of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Flinders University and an Adjunct Professor in the Discipline of Medicine at The University of Adelaide. He is also the Medical Director of the Adelaide Institute of Sleep Health (AISH) and has extensive expertise in public health, clinical epidemiology, and health services research.
His research focuses on
- sleep health, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its impact on conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and mental health
- population-based cohort studies, including leadership of the North West Adelaide Health Study (NWAHS) and the MAILES study
- applying systems thinking, design thinking, and simulation modeling through the Cumberland.au collaboration to reform healthcare systems
Prof Adams has secured grants from the NHMRC and ARC to study health aging, obesity, and spatial epidemiology of metabolic health. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications in top journals like Diabetes Care, Sleep, and American Journal of Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine. He has also led initiatives in health system safety, including the TeamSTEPPS program at SA Health and membership in the Australian Patient Safety Foundation board.
