Sarah Appleton is a Senior Research Fellow at Flinders University specializing in sleep epidemiology, with primary focus on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its relationship with chronic disease outcomes. She leads critical research initiatives through the MAILES study and North West Adelaide Health Study (NWAHS), addressing significant gaps in OSA diagnosis and treatment.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD, University of Adelaide (2010)
- Bachelor of Science (Honours), Flinders University (1988)
- Bachelor of Science, University of Adelaide (1987)
Dr. Appleton's research centers on identifying clinical phenotypes of at-risk populations to inform health policy and chronic disease prevention. Since 2012, she has been Australia's most productive epidemiologist investigating OSA co-morbidities through the MAILES study, revealing substantial undiagnosed OSA burden in men. Current projects examine electrophysiological signals (EEG/ECG) for improved risk stratification and address the critical underrepresentation of women in OSA research – despite evidence suggesting 25% of women may be affected. Her work directly informs evidenced-based health service delivery models.
She actively manages multiple major studies:
- MAILES study follow-up (funded by NH&MRC Australia and The Hospital Research Foundation)
- 20-year NWAHS longitudinal assessment
- Sleep Health Foundation 2019 insomnia survey analysis
Dr. Appleton co-supervises postgraduate students and maintains key collaborations with The University of Adelaide (SAHMRI) and Sydney University's Woolcock Institute. As a member of The Sleep Health Foundation and Australasian Sleep Association, she advocates for improved OSA diagnosis protocols with particular emphasis on developing women-specific research frameworks.
