Danny Eckert is a Matthew Flinders Professor at Flinders University’s College of Medicine and Public Health and Director of the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health. He leads translational research on obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and respiratory disease, focusing on precision medicine and therapeutic development. His work includes respiratory endo-phenotyping and clinical trials for pharmacotherapy. He holds adjunct roles at the University of New South Wales and Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA).
Education: PhD (Sleep/Respiratory Physiology), School of Molecular and Biomedical Science, University of Adelaide (2006); B.Sc. (Hons) Respiratory Physiology (1st Class), University of Adelaide (2002); B.App.Sc. Human Movement/Exercise Physiology, University of South Australia (2000).
Research Interests: OSA pathophysiology, neuromuscular control of the upper airway, clinical translation of therapies, and sleep-disordered breathing mechanisms. His work bridges basic science and clinical practice, aiming to improve patient outcomes through tailored treatments.
Awards: 2024 Excellence in Science and Industry Collaboration Award; 2023 Gold Medal in Sleep Disordered Breathing (ERS); 2023 Flinders VC Research Leadership Award; Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (2023).
Advising & Grants: NHMRC Leadership Fellow; recipient of multiple research grants including CRC-P and industry partnerships. Supervised numerous postgraduate students, highlighted by awards for research supervision (UNSW, 2015–2016).
Labs/Teams: Leads the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health and collaborates with NeuRA, Woolcock Institute, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Boston, part-time).
