Dr. Gary Waite serves as Professor of History within the Faculty of Arts at the University of New Brunswick. His distinguished career focuses on Early Modern Europe (c. 1400-1700), particularly examining religious persecution, prejudicial thinking, and the historical development of tolerance.
Waite's research centers on the intellectual and social dynamics of religious conflict in Early Modern Europe, with special emphasis on the Netherlands as a case study for freedom of conscience and religious diversity. His work explores how societies navigated religious tensions during periods of profound ideological transformation, analyzing both the roots of demonizing rhetoric and mechanisms for suppressing intolerance.
- UNB Award for Excellence in Research (2018): Inaugural recipient honoring his "outstanding research, scholarly, or creative achievements," established through a gift from Dr. Friedrich Grein.
Supported by SSHRC funding, Waite acknowledges critical contributions from colleagues in the History department and Faculty of Arts. His research demonstrates the humanities' ongoing relevance in understanding contemporary issues through historical perspectives on belief systems and social behavior.
