Gary Evans is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Management at Bournemouth University, affiliated with the Department of Sports & Events Management within the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences. He is actively engaged in teaching, research, and external academic collaborations, particularly with institutions in China such as the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE). His academic work bridges sport management, health interventions, and systems thinking methodologies.
His research interests center on Community Operational Research, Medical Sociology, and physical activity interventions for inactive populations and cancer survivors. He applies Systems Thinking and Systems Practice (STSP) to evaluate healthcare delivery systems, particularly in cancer support services. His PhD, a narrative inquiry into lifestyle-based secondary prevention for cancer patients, draws on Medical Sociology (Cockerham, 2021) and emphasizes the role of charities in facilitating behavioural change.
His recent publications focus on systems approaches in healthcare and event management, demonstrating a consistent trend in applying critical systems thinking to complex social and health challenges. These works highlight interdisciplinary methods, stakeholder engagement, and model development for service improvement.

Gary Evans leads research teams conducting qualitative interviews with healthcare professionals, policymakers, and charity workers to assess system changes and behavioural outcomes. His work contributes directly to UN Sustainable Development Goals SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. He is also the Academic Lead for China (Sport), facilitating international collaboration between Bournemouth University and Chinese higher education institutions.
