Lois Farquharson is Professor and Executive Dean of Bournemouth University Business School (BUBS), a role she has held since October 2019. She has previously served as Head of the Human Resources and Organisational Behaviour Department and Deputy Dean for Education & Professional Practice. She is based at the Talbot Campus, Dorset House, and can be contacted at lfarquharson@bournemouth.ac.uk.
Her academic background includes a PhD from Strathclyde University, an MSc and BA from Glasgow Caledonian University, and a PGCE from Edinburgh Napier University. She is a Chartered Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, Academic Fellow of CIPD, and Fellow of AdvanceHE.
Lois’s research focuses on leadership development, change management, HRM, inclusivity, diversity, and wellbeing in higher education and public sector organisations. She has led impactful knowledge exchange projects with the NHS, Local Councils, and the Police Force. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals on Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
Her recent publications explore themes such as compassionate leadership, socio-emotional intelligence, innovation in SMEs, psychological ownership, and humanising higher education. The articles reflect a strong interdisciplinary focus on leadership, organisational change, and human-centred management practices across public and academic sectors.

Lois has supervised multiple PhD and DBA students in areas including culture change, sustainability, leadership, and public sector partnerships. She has secured grants such as the Help to Grow Management Programme and the SPEED-You-UP project funded by the European Commission. She serves as an Expert Peer Reviewer for AACSB and has held leadership roles in the Chartered Management Institute’s regional boards. She is also active in journal reviewing and as a judge for the Dorset Business Festival Awards.
She is a member of the CIPD and AdvanceHE, and contributes to external professional networks, demonstrating a strong commitment to advancing management education and practice.
