Dr. Gary Abel is Professor of Medical Statistics and Health Services Research and Deputy Director of the Exeter Collaboration for Academic Primary Care (APEx) at the University of Exeter Medical School. His research leverages routine healthcare data to address critical questions in health services delivery and interpretation.

- Patient Experience: Statistical leadership for NIHR's IMPROVE programme using GP and Cancer Patient Experience Surveys, generating over 50 publications on data interpretation.
- Service Delivery Evaluation: Analysis of integrated care models (National Integrated Care Pilots) and digital health initiatives including NIHR-funded Telefirst and Di-Facto projects.
- Cancer Diagnosis: Collaboration with UCL on Cancer Research UK-funded studies examining diagnostic pathway variability to inform interventions.
His methodological expertise focuses on quantifying organizational performance variation and avoiding misinterpretation of crude healthcare statistics.
