Gareth Purvis is an Oxford BHF CRE Transition Fellow and Pre-Clinical (Non-Stipendiary) Lecturer at the University of Oxford's Dunn School of Pathology. He holds affiliations with Hertford College and Pembroke College. His research focuses on translational cardiovascular and metabolic disease, particularly the role of Bruton's Tyrosine Kinase (BTK) in monocyte/macrophage activation and immunometabolic pathways.
Education: BSc (Hons) in Biology from the University of York (Head of Department's Award recipient), followed by a British Heart Foundation-funded MRes/PhD at Queen Mary University of London under Prof Christoph Thiemermann. Postdoctoral work included a BHF program grant at the Dunn School of Pathology.
Research interests span diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and inflammation, with emphasis on BTK regulation, macrophage differentiation, and epigenetic mechanisms. Key projects include the MeRAID consortium studying metabolite impacts on diabetes/cardiovascular disease.
Publications highlight breakthroughs in macrophage targeting via CD68 promoters, BTK's role in metabolic inflammation, and anti-inflammatory repurposing of sunitinib. Awards include the BHF PhD studentship and Oxford BHF Transition Fellowship.
Grants and collaborations include Novo Nordisk Foundation funding. Ongoing work explores immunometabolic benefits of BTK inhibition in obesity and sepsis-related cardiac dysfunction.
