Gabriella Shypula is the Leigh and Mary Carter Director’s Research Fellow at the Cleveland Museum of Art and a PhD candidate in Art History & Criticism at Stony Brook University. Her research focuses on New York-based women artists and autobiography in the 1970s–80s, with expertise in Global Contemporary Art, Feminist Historiography, Queer Theory, and Exhibition Histories. She has curated projects like Revisiting 5+1 at the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery and contributed to initiatives at major institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and MoMA.
Her academic credentials include an MA in Art History and Criticism from Stony Brook University, complemented by a graduate certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Awards and fellowships have supported her work, including recognition from the Kusama Research and Travel Awards and the Miriam and Maurice Goldberger Fellowship. Shypula’s career bridges scholarly research and museum practice, with roles in curation, editorial work, and public engagement.
Professional experience includes curatorial roles at the SFMOMA, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and Baltimore Museum of Art. Her research emphasizes intersectional narratives in art history, particularly amplifying underrepresented voices through exhibition and publication projects.
