Katy Siegel is a Distinguished Professor and holds the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Endowed Chair in Modern American Art at Stony Brook University’s Department of Art, within the College of Arts and Sciences. She is also Senior Curator for Research and Programming at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Her work bridges scholarship and curatorial practice, focusing on postwar and contemporary art, material/social histories, and curatorial studies.
She earned her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin. Notable projects include co-curating major exhibitions like *Joan Mitchell* (SFMOMA, 2021) and *Postwar: Art Between the Pacific and the Atlantic* (Haus der Kunst, 2016). Her books, such as *Since ’45: America and the Making of Contemporary Art* (2011) and *Abstract Expressionism* (2011), explore intersections of art, history, and culture.
Siegel’s research engages artists like Mary Lovelace O’Neal and Toshiko Takaezu, emphasizing marginalized narratives. She advises the Getty Research Institute’s African-American Archive Initiative and contributes to *Artforum* and *The Brooklyn Rail*. Her curatorial work, including the Venice Biennale’s *Tomorrow Is Another Day* (2017), reflects her commitment to global art dialogues and critical analysis.
