Joseph L. Underwood is an Associate Professor of Art History at Kent State University's College of the Arts, specializing in 20th-21st century African and Diaspora art. He holds a B.A. from Transylvania University and M.A./Ph.D. from Stony Brook University. His research explores post-colonialism, transnational networks, and Francophone African art, with a focus on Senegal and North/West Africa.
Teaching includes courses on African art history, museology, and exhibition politics. He actively involves students in curatorial projects at institutions like the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art and the Dakar Biennale. Recent curatorial works include TEXTURES: the history and art of Black hair and Import/Export.
Notable awards include the Andy Warhol Arts Writer Grant (2023), National Endowment for the Arts grant, and Tyson Scholar appointment. His academic presentations merge scholarly research with curatorial practice, emphasizing transnational cultural flows and institutional critique.
