Emilie Boone is an Assistant Professor of African American/African Diaspora Arts at New York University's Department of Art History, affiliated with the Institute of Fine Arts and College of Arts and Sciences. Her work focuses on vernacular photography of the African Diaspora, global visual encounters, and Haitian art history. Boone holds multiple fellowships including from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation and Terra Foundation, and her book A Nimble Arc: James Van Der Zee and Photography (2023) was a National Book Critics Circle Awards finalist.
Her research bridges academic scholarship and curatorial practice, including projects at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and CUNY's Vernacular Photographs Archive. Boone teaches courses such as 'Centering Photography of the African Diaspora' and has expanded her teaching to NYU Abu Dhabi. Current research includes reappraising Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe's work and a second manuscript on Haitian photography history, supported by grants from The Clark Art Institute and Andy Warhol Foundation.
