Hetland is a political sociologist who employs ethnographic and comparative historical methods to examine democracy, the state, urban and national politics, labor, and social movements. His research particularly investigates participatory democracy in cities governed by both left and right parties in Venezuela and Bolivia, challenging conventional wisdom about the conditions under which democratic reforms can succeed. His work extends to contemporary issues including climate change politics, decarbonization efforts linked to social justice, and the political dynamics of the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela.
Hetland's scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on Latin American politics, with particular emphasis on Venezuela and Bolivia. His publications demonstrate a trajectory from examining specific cases of participatory democracy to broader theoretical questions about political hegemony, democratic deepening, and the relationship between left-wing movements and democratic institutions. Recent work shows increasing attention to climate politics and decarbonization efforts, reflecting an expansion of his research agenda into environmental politics while maintaining his core interest in democratic theory and practice.
