Leslie C. Gates is a Professor of Sociology and Undergraduate Director at Binghamton University, USA. She is also a faculty affiliate of the Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies Program. A historical sociologist specializing in Latin American politics, her research focuses on state-business relations, political economy, and social movements. She has conducted fieldwork in Mexico and Venezuela supported by two Fulbright awards.
Education: PhD and MA from the University of Arizona; BA from Princeton University.
Research Interests: Historical sociological analysis of political developments in Latin America, particularly exploring how historical legacies of capitalism shape contemporary political dynamics. Recent work examines labor movements in Mexico and Venezuela, the rise of leftist leaders, and the impact of neoliberal policies.
Publications: Over 20 peer-reviewed articles and books, including Capitalist Outsiders: Oil's Legacies in Mexico and Venezuela (2023), which won multiple prestigious awards. Recent work analyzes the antibusiness basis of leftist presidencies in neoliberal Latin America and the lasting impact of historical labor movements.
Awards: 2024 Barrington Moore Book Award, 2024 ASA Distinguished Contribution Award, 2024 Honorable Mention Wallerstein Memorial Award, and others. Recognized for contributions to political sociology and historical analysis.
Advising & Grants: Actively mentors graduate students in political sociology and historical methods. Served as Chair of the ASA's Political Economy of the World System section. Her research has been funded by Fulbright and institutional grants.
Professional Contributions: Engages in interdisciplinary dialogue on world-systems theory and labor policy innovations. Regularly presents at international conferences and publishes in top journals like Latin American Perspectives and Journal of World-Systems Research.
