Eben Levey is an Assistant Professor of History at Alfred University's Human Studies school, specializing in religion, social movements, and indigeneity in 20th-century Mexico. His research focuses on Liberation Theology's intersection with Indigenous rights movements, particularly in Mexico during the 1970s-80s. He holds a PhD from the University of Maryland (2021), an MA from Georgetown University (2013), and a BA from Vassar College (2008).
His current research, supported by a Fulbright Fellowship, examines how Catholic activists indigenized Liberation Theology through collaboration with Indigenous communities. He has published in academic journals and edited volumes, and presented at major conferences like the American Historical Association Annual Conference and Latin American Studies Association Congress.
Levey teaches courses on Latin American history, Modern Mexico, Liberation Theology, and the global history of soccer and politics. He prioritizes innovative pedagogy, including creative writing and Wikipedia contributions. Notable courses include Modern Mexico, Indigenous Latin America, and Soccer! A Global History of Sport and Politics.
His awards include the Fulbright Fellowship (2021). Levey previously taught at the University of Maryland, American University, Western Washington University, and Boise State University as a Visiting Assistant Professor.
