Jaclyn Sumner, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of History at Presbyterian College. She specializes in Latin American and Mexican history with a focus on Indigenous politics, environmental change, and modernization. Her research examines figures like Próspero Cahuantzi, exploring governance under Porfirio Díaz's regime.
Education:

Research Interests: Dr. Sumner's work bridges colonial and modern Latin America, emphasizing race, gender, and power dynamics. Her book manuscript, Indigenous Autocracy (forthcoming, Stanford University Press, 2023), analyzes Indigenous political agency in 19th-century Mexico. She has conducted fieldwork in Mexico and Spain, leading student trips to the Yucatán Peninsula (2018) and Spain (2019).
