Alejandro Caneque is a Professor of History at the University of Maryland, affiliated with the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center. His research focuses on early modern Spain, colonial Latin America, and the Spanish Empire, with expertise in political culture, religious history, and imperial governance. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from New York University.

His research explores the political and religious cultures of the Spanish Empire, particularly in colonial Mexico and the Atlantic world. Recent works examine the role of martyrdom narratives in consolidating Spanish colonialism and the dynamics of the transatlantic slave trade. Current projects include a study on the 18th-century Asiento de negros slave trade operations.
Teaching specialties include encounters between Europeans, Africans, and Indigenous peoples in the Americas, colonial Spanish America, and Atlantic world history.
