Luis Herrán Ávila is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of New Mexico. His research focuses on Cold War Latin America, particularly conservative, anticommunist, and extreme right movements in Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia. He is currently working on a book project examining right-wing activism in Cold War Mexico as a transnational anticommunist hub.
Education: B.A. in Latin American Studies (National Autonomous University of Mexico), M.A. and PhD in Politics and Historical Studies (The New School for Social Research).
Research interests include modern Latin American history, political and intellectual history, revolutionary and counterrevolutionary violence, and the intersections of banditry and insurgency. His work has been supported by grants from Fulbright, CONACYT, and the Hoover Institution.
Notable publications include analyses of Mexico's Catholic right, Argentine counterrevolutionary movements, and the criminalization of dissent in Colombia and Mexico. He has received awards such as the 2023 Syllabus Prize and 2022 Outstanding Faculty Award in Latin American Studies.
Teaching includes courses on modern Latin America, postrevolutionary Mexico, and the global Cold War. His interdisciplinary work bridges history, political science, and transnational studies.
