Dr. Molly Avery is a Lecturer in the History of the Americas at the University of Sheffield's School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities. She holds a BA from the University of Cambridge and an MSc and PhD in International History from the London School of Economics. Her research focuses on Latin America's Cold War era, particularly anticommunist internationalism, dictatorship violence, and transnational connections between the Southern Cone and Central America. Her current book project, Building an Anticommunist International, examines Chilean and Argentine influence in Guatemala and El Salvador (1977–1984), challenging US-centric narratives. She has published in Journal of Latin American Studies and The Americas.
Her research has been supported by organizations including the Society for Latin American Studies and the Royal Historical Society. Teaching includes undergraduate courses on Latin American dictatorships and revolutions, as well as postgraduate modules on the Global Cold War and hemispheric relations. Prior to joining Sheffield in 2023, she taught at Queen Mary University of London.
