Dr. José Manuel Castro is a historian specializing in Latin American political and intellectual history, with a focus on Chile during the 20th century. He is currently a PhD candidate in History at University College London's Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences, where he is researching "Intellectuals, politics and ideology in the era of revolutions. Chile 1964-1980" under the supervision of Nicola Miller and Thom Rath, with expected completion in 2023. Concurrently, he serves as a faculty member at Universidad San Sebastián's Institute of History in Chile, where he has contributed to major collaborative historical projects.
Castro earned his BA and MA in History from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC), establishing the foundation for his expertise in Chilean political history. His academic journey reflects a deep engagement with the complex political transformations that shaped modern Chile, particularly during the Cold War period.
Castro's research centers on the political and intellectual history of Latin America in the 20th century, with particular emphasis on ideological conflicts during Latin America's Cold War. His work examines the intellectual foundations of revolutionary changes in Chile between 1964 and 1980 from a global perspective. He has developed significant expertise in Chilean political thought, particularly regarding Jaime Guzmán, gremialismo, and the ideological origins of Chile's 1980 Constitution. His scholarship bridges conceptual history, political theory, and historical analysis to explore how ideas shaped political realities during this turbulent period.
His extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on Chilean political history, with particular attention to the Allende government, the Unidad Popular period, and the subsequent authoritarian regime under Pinochet. His work reveals a sophisticated understanding of how Catholic social thought, particularly concepts of subsidiarity, influenced Chilean political development during the Cold War era. Castro's research contributes significantly to our understanding of how global ideological conflicts manifested in specific national contexts.

His research has been supported by significant funding, including the prestigious Becas Chile scholarship and the Cold War Archives Research Fellowship, which have enabled his work on primary sources related to Chile's political transformation during the Cold War period.
Castro is actively involved in academic communities focused on Latin American history and political thought. His work with the CEUSS (Centro de Estudios) at Universidad San Sebastián on the comprehensive "Historia de Chile 1960-2010" project demonstrates his participation in major collaborative research initiatives. His conference presentations at institutions including Freie Universität Berlin and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile indicate his engagement with international scholarly networks examining Cold War politics in Latin America.
