Benjamin Goldfrank, Ph.D., is a Professor at Seton Hall University's School of Diplomacy and International Relations, affiliated with the Center for Foreign Policy Studies. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (2002) and an AB from Harvard University (1993). His research focuses on Latin American politics, sub-national governments, and participatory budgeting, with a particular emphasis on democratic innovations and institutional design. Goldfrank has authored influential works such as The Rise, Spread, and Decline of Brazil’s Participatory Budgeting (2022) and Deepening Local Democracy in Latin America (2011). His awards include the 2022-2023 School of Diplomacy Researcher of the Year and 2016 University Teacher of the Year. His recent work explores the intersection of digital technologies and participatory institutions, as seen in his 2024 chapter on 'Participatory Institutions, Digital Technologies, and Democratic Crises.' Goldfrank has also engaged with media, including a 2024 podcast on voter behavior.
Goldfrank’s scholarship addresses challenges in participatory democracy, institutional sustainability, and gender representation in academia. His research highlights how participatory mechanisms interact with political power structures and technological change. He has contributed to debates on Latin American leftist governments and urban governance, emphasizing both achievements and systemic limitations.
