Géraldine Mathieu is a Senior Lecturer in Family Law at the University of Namur's Faculty of Law, where she teaches courses in family law, youth law, and the philosophy of children's rights in the Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Approach to Children's Rights.
Her educational background includes:
- Law degree from UCL (2000)
- Certificate of aptitude for the legal profession (CAPA) (2001)
- Doctor of Legal Sciences from UNamur (2014) with dissertation on "The Secret of Origins in Filiation Law"
Mathieu's research focuses on family law, children's rights, youth assistance and protection, and bioethics. Her work particularly examines filiation, adoption, children's rights, and the intersection of bioethics with human rights. She has published extensively in these areas, with recent work addressing domestic violence protections, gender-neutral parentage law, and the best interests of the child in migration contexts.
She co-directs the Vulnerabilities & Societies Center at UNamur and heads the "Children's Rights" Unit within it. Mathieu is also co-president of the Famille & Droit association, which brings together family law professors from French-speaking Belgian universities, and serves on the editorial board of the Revue trimestrielle de droit familial.

Mathieu previously served as a children's rights expert for Defense for Children International Belgium (2014-2019) and was Vice President for Europe on DCI's International Executive Committee. She has also held positions on various committees including the ethics committee of the UCL Namur University Hospital (2010-2023) and the Federal Commission for the Control and Evaluation of Euthanasia (2017-2023).
