Frederick P. Buttell is a tenured Professor at Tulane University's School of Social Work, teaching clinical practice, HBSE, and research methods. He serves as Chair of Tulane's Social/Behavioral IRB since 2013 and founded the Doctorate in Social Work program.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Social Work, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa (1997)
- MSW in Mental Health, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa (1993)
- BA in Psychology, Oglethorpe University, Atlanta, GA (1991)
Dr. Buttell's research centers on eliminating domestic violence to improve family functioning, with specialized expertise in batterer intervention programs. He pioneered work on IPV among LGBTQ offenders and ethical research in post-disaster contexts, integrating clinical social work with policy development to address family violence comprehensively.
Analysis of his publications reveals a consistent thematic evolution: from foundational studies on women perpetrators of relationship violence (2005), to gender-specific batterer intervention evaluations (2017), and contemporary disaster-related IPV research (2018). This trajectory demonstrates increasing focus on contextual factors like disasters and sexual orientation in violence dynamics.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Tulane University Provost’s Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship (2005)
As an academic leader, Dr. Buttell directed the Elizabeth Wisner Center for Research on Children and Families for nine years, supporting violence-against-women research. He founded Tulane's Doctorate in Social Work program, mentoring doctoral candidates while twice serving as School of Social Work commencement speaker.
He leads the Elizabeth Wisner Center—which conducts community-engaged family violence research—and chairs Tulane's Social/Behavioral IRB, ensuring ethical standards across social science disciplines while addressing post-disaster research complexities.
