Regardt Ferreira, PhD, is a tenured Professor of Social Work at Tulane University's School of Social Work, serving as Director of the Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy and Executive Director of the Consortium for Emergent Disaster Resilience. With over two decades of field experience across five continents, his work integrates administration, research, and program development in disaster resilience and behavioral health.
His educational foundation includes:
- Bachelor of Social Work, University of the Free State (South Africa)
- Master of Science in Disaster Risk Management (cum laude), University of the Free State
- PhD in Social Work (Dean citation), University of Louisville
Dr. Ferreira's research centers on disaster resilience, climate change impacts, and behavioral health, with specialized expertise in intimate partner violence during disasters and equitable recovery frameworks. His fieldwork spans Europe, Africa, North America, the Caribbean, and South Asia, focusing on community-based solutions for vulnerable populations. As Chief Editor of the APA's Traumatology journal (impact factor 3.2), he shapes global discourse on trauma recovery.
Analysis of his 100+ publications reveals evolving priorities: early work examined disaster-IPV linkages post-Katrina, while recent research emphasizes equitable climate adaptation, technology-enhanced mental health interventions, and systemic barriers in disaster recovery. His 2023-2025 publications increasingly address wearable technology for first responders and intersectional vulnerability frameworks.
Key recognitions include:
- Three Tulane Outstanding Faculty Awards (2014, 2017, 2021-2022)
- American Red Cross Executive Stamp of Approval (2021)
- ACEC Engineering Excellence Award (2016)
He has secured $44M+ in funding, including a $550K Walmart Foundation grant for the Consortium for Equitable Disaster Resilience (2024-2026) and $8.5M for Gulf Coast resilience (2015-2020). His leadership in developing Tulane's Doctor of Social Work program and MS-Disaster Resilience Leadership curriculum has trained next-generation practitioners. Media outlets including CNN, NPR, and Rolling Stone regularly feature his expertise on climate mental health and disaster equity.
As active advisor to the National Academies of Science and FEMA, he bridges research and policy while leading the Consortium for Emergent Disaster Resilience's community-driven initiatives across 12 countries.
