Fred Buttell is a Professor at the School of Social Work at Tulane University, with additional faculty appointments in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health & Tropical Medicine. He has been a faculty member at Tulane since 2002 and previously taught at the University of South Carolina. He holds leadership roles as Director of the Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) Program, Director of the Undergraduate Minor Program, and Chair of the Social/Behavioral IRB.
His research focuses on intimate partner violence, family violence, community violence, and psychological resilience, particularly in the context of disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic. He has developed several academic programs, including an undergraduate minor in Social Policy & Practice and a PhD in City, Community & Culture.
Dr. Buttell’s recent publications explore the intersection of IPV and public health crises, resilience in marginalized communities, and the effectiveness of batterer intervention models. His work spans disciplines including social work, psychology, public health, and criminology, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based practices and policy implications.
He has served as an expert witness in criminal proceedings for Tulane’s Domestic Violence Law Clinic and the Women’s Prison Project, highlighting his applied contributions to justice and advocacy.
