Fred Reid was a Lecturer in History at the University of Warwick from 1966 to 1997. His research focuses on 19th-century British social history, literary criticism of Thomas Hardy, and disability rights advocacy. He earned a first-class honours degree in History from Edinburgh University (1962) and a doctorate from Oxford's Queen's College (1967).
Reid's career includes influential works like Keir Hardie: the Making of a Socialist (1978) and In Search of Willie Patterson (2002). He has actively promoted disability rights through leadership roles in the National Federation of the Blind (1972-1975) and RNIB (1974-1987, 1999-2006). His activism led to pioneering initiatives like RNIB's inclusive Loughborough college and disability living allowance programs.
