Dr. Fred L. Nesbitt is a Professor in the Department of Natural Sciences at Coppin State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from West Virginia University (1982), an M.S. from the same institution (1978), and a B.A. in Chemistry from Southern Illinois University (1972). His research focuses on computational chemistry applications in solar cell materials, medicinal compounds, polymer design, and PFAS detection using Raman spectroscopy. He has pioneered work on dye-sensitized solar cells and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for environmental analysis.
Dr. Nesbitt has mentored students for 34 years, coordinating both undergraduate and graduate chemistry programs. He actively connects students with industry partners like Early Charm, Under Armour, and Merck. He received the 2002 E. Emmet Reid Award for Teaching Excellence from the American Chemical Society. Current initiatives include developing computational chemistry curricula using Spartan 24 and Gaussian 16 software.
His interdisciplinary research spans nanotechnology, environmental chemistry, and energy materials. Collaborations with NASA and Brookhaven National Laboratory highlight his contributions to combustion chemistry and planetary chemistry.
