Joe Shapter is a Professor at Flinders University's College of Science and Engineering, where he has progressed from Lecturer (1996) to full Professor (2008). He serves as Adjunct Research Leader at the Flinders Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, and holds key roles including Dean of the School of Chemical & Physical Sciences and Associate Dean (Teaching). His qualifications include a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Toronto (1990) and a B.Sc. (Hons) from Memorial University of Newfoundland (1985).
Research interests focus on nanotechnology applications including:
- Scanning probe microscopy for atomic-scale imaging
- Glucose biosensors for diabetic monitoring
- Carbon nanotube integration in electronics and solar cells
- Biological membrane dynamics analysis
- Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for pesticide detection
Recent publications (2024) demonstrate advanced work in MXene composites, photocatalytic materials, and nanostructured SERS substrates for environmental monitoring. Research consistently integrates materials science with practical applications in energy and sensing.
Awards include:
- ATLC Award for Teaching Excellence (2009)
- Carrick Institute Citation (2007)
- NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (1991-1993)
- Gold Medal in Chemistry (1985)
Supervised notable students including Kate Moore (Playford Fellow) and Cameron Shearer (SA Thesis of the Year winner). Professional leadership encompasses Deputy Directorship of the South Australian Regional Facility for Microscopy and Microanalysis (SARF) and membership in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Board.
