Professor Fran Baum AO is a distinguished public health social scientist holding positions as Professor of Health Equity at the Stretton Institute, University of Adelaide, and Program Director of Stretton Health Equity. Previously, she served as Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor and Director of the Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity at Flinders University (2009-2021). Her work focuses on creating healthy, equitable societies through policy-relevant research.
Her research examines social determinants of health, health equity frameworks, and Health in All Policies approaches. Key interests include:
- Structural drivers of health inequities
- Commercial determinants of health
- Global health governance
- Intersectional policy analysis
Professor Baum has received significant recognition including:
- Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for public health service
- Fellowship in the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia
- Fellowship in the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences
- Life Membership of the Public Health Association of Australia
She leads major research initiatives funded by the NHMRC and ARC, including a $2.24M Investigator Grant examining post-COVID health equity policies. As co-Chair of the People's Health Movement Global Steering Council, she coordinates global health activism networks across 70+ countries.
