Fliss Murtagh is a Professor of Palliative Care at the Hull York Medical School and Director of the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre. She also holds a Visiting Professorship in Palliative Care at King’s College London. Her expertise spans palliative and end-of-life care for older adults and those with non-cancer conditions such as advanced kidney disease. She leads the Institute for Clinical and Applied Health Research’s (ICAHR) Applied Health Research group, encompassing the Wolfson Centre, the Academy of Primary Care, and the Cancer Awareness, Screening, and Diagnostic Pathways Research Group.
Qualifications include a PhD from King’s College London and an MBBS from the University of London. Her research focuses on outcomes, resource use, and patient-centered approaches in palliative care, with a particular emphasis on marginalized populations and healthcare inequalities. She has secured extensive funding through grants from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), including her NIHR Senior Investigator Award (2024–2028).
Her impactful work includes developing outcome measures like the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS) and multinational validation studies for child-centered palliative care metrics. She supervises multiple PhD students, including Mary Kimani, Ugochinyere Nwulu, and Sophie Pask. Her research addresses disparities in end-of-life care access, particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged groups and ethnic minorities.
Awards include the NIHR Senior Investigator designation, recognizing her leadership in patient-centered research. She contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at Hull York Medical School and collaborates with global teams to advance palliative care standards.
