Professor Liz Walker is a distinguished academic at the University of Hull, holding dual roles as Professor of Health and Social Work Research and Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Culture). She is affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences and School of Psychology and Social Work, and leads research initiatives at the Institute for Clinical and Applied Health Research (ICAHR) and the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre. Her research focuses on the sociology of health and gender, chronic illnesses (including autoimmune conditions like scleroderma), palliative care, and HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.
Walker earned her BA, MA, and PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Her current projects include investigating homecare workers' experiences in end-of-life care, the impact of oral health challenges in scleroderma, and the role of grandfathers in caring for AIDS orphans in Malawi. She has secured significant grants from bodies like the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC), and Yorkshire Cancer Research.
Her recent publications examine topics such as dignity in district nursing, Tai Chi for palliative patients, and the ethical dimensions of cross-cultural research with children. Walker’s work bridges academic rigor with practical applications, addressing systemic inequities in healthcare delivery and advocating for marginalized groups, including grandparent caregivers and NHS employees with lupus.
