Dr Fiona Errington-Mais serves as Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Leeds within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. She holds key roles as Group Leader, Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research (PGR) studies, and Module Lead for MEDM5420M, conducting research through the Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St James's with affiliations to the Infection and Immunity and Breast Cancer Research Groups.
Education:
- 1st Class BSc (Honours) in Biochemistry, Newcastle University (1997)
- PhD in Topoisomerase Inhibitors for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, Newcastle University (2000)
Her pioneering work in cancer immunotherapy centers on oncolytic viruses as dual-action therapeutics—direct tumor-bursting agents and immune modulators that enhance innate/adaptive anti-tumor responses. Current research focuses on molecular mechanisms of viral efficacy, tumor microenvironment dynamics in hematological/solid malignancies, and developing synergistic combination therapies. Key projects include 3D tumor microenvironment modeling, oncogenic immune cell reprogramming, and fibroblast-macrophage immunosuppression in ovarian cancer.
Scientific Awards:
- YCR Researcher Award (2013)
As Deputy Director of PGR studies, she oversees postgraduate research programs and mentors PhD candidates. Her active research group pursues translational cancer projects funded through institutional and external grants, with recent promotion to Associate Professor (March 2022) reflecting significant contributions to immunotherapy development.
Her laboratory operates within the Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St James's, collaborating across the Infection and Immunity and Breast Cancer Research Groups to advance novel therapeutic strategies for diverse cancer types.
