Fernando Luís Machado

Fernando Luís Machado is a Full Professor in the Department of Sociology at ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon, where he also holds the position of Integrated Researcher at CIES-Iscte (Center for Research and Studies in Sociology). His academic leadership includes serving as Vice-Rector for Research (2014–2018), Director of CIES-IUL (2010–2014), and Director of the Doctoral Program in Sociology. He is actively involved in teaching, research, and academic governance, with a strong institutional presence at ISCTE-IUL.

His research focuses on social class and inequality, migration and ethnicity, youth studies, sociology of sociology, and the cultural and economic value of the Portuguese language. His work explores social stratification, identity formation, integration of immigrant populations, and reproductive health dynamics in transnational contexts. He has contributed significantly to understanding the sociological landscape in Portugal and Lusophone communities.

Fernando Luís Machado has supervised 14 doctoral theses and 31 master’s dissertations, with 6 postdoctoral supervisees completed. He is currently supervising 11 PhD students and 1 master’s student. His research projects, such as EQUALS4COVID19 and FEMINA, address pressing social issues like mental health equity during pandemics and fertility patterns among immigrant families. These projects reflect his commitment to intersectional and policy-relevant sociological inquiry.

His scientific contributions have been recognized with the João Ferreira de Almeida Prize in 2023 for his book Sociological Research in Portugal: A Historical and Analytical Guide.

He has held leadership roles in academic management, including membership in the General Council of ISCTE-IUL (2013–2018), coordination of the CIES-IUL Research Forum (2010–2013), and participation in scientific committees of major conferences such as the Ibero-American Congress on Qualitative Research. He is a longstanding member of the Portuguese Sociology Association since 1985.

Fernando Luís Machado is based at CIES-Iscte, a leading research center in sociology, where he contributes to interdisciplinary teams focused on migration, social inequality, and public policy. His work continues to shape the sociological discourse in Portugal and beyond.
