Sofia Gaspar is a Senior Researcher at CIES-IUL, Lisbon University Institute (ISCTE-IUL), Portugal, holding a PhD in Sociology from Complutense University of Madrid (2005). She previously served as a Visiting Professor at EASt during 2019-2020.

Her research centers on migration dynamics with specialized focus on transnational families, Chinese diaspora communities, and social integration of immigrants' descendants. She extensively examines bi-national couples and ethnicity/racism frameworks within Portuguese and European contexts, particularly analyzing the Chinese community's integration patterns and belonging narratives.
Her scholarly output includes the co-authored book Southeast Asian Migration: People on the Move in Search of Work, Refuge and Belonging (2015) and multiple journal publications in Journal of Chinese Overseas and Portuguese Journal of Social Science, revealing consistent thematic emphasis on labor migration, refugee experiences, and diaspora identity formation across Southeast Asian and Chinese migrant populations.
Dr. Gaspar coordinates research projects on transnational families and Chinese immigration, demonstrating significant grant management capabilities. She actively contributes to academic governance as Member of the Organizing Committee for the Migrations, Ethnicity and Racism Thematic Section of the Portuguese Sociological Association (APS).
