Fergus Ryan is a Professor and Head of School at the School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth University, and holds the position of Associate Dean of Social Sciences. He earned his LLB (Hons) and PhD from Trinity College Dublin. With over 25 years of experience, his expertise spans family law, constitutional law, gender studies, sexual orientation law, and human rights. He previously served as Head of the Department of Law at Dublin Institute of Technology (2003–2009 and 2013) and has held visiting roles at institutions like Trinity College Dublin and Vilnius University.
His research focuses on civil partnership, cohabitation, LGBTQ+ rights, transgender recognition, and constitutional challenges. Notable projects include the "Review of the Operation of the Provisions of the Guardianship of Infants Act 1964" (2022) and a study on free access to contraception (2021). He has advised governmental bodies like the Equality Authority and contributed to legislative reforms, including the Adoption (Identity and Information) Bill 2015.
Ryan has authored influential texts such as *Constitutional Law* (3rd ed., 2018) and *Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010*. His recent work examines LGBTQ+ rights in international law and post-marriage equality legal landscapes.
