Dr. Fenqjen Luo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education at Montana State University (MSU), affiliated with the College of Education, Health & Human Development. Her work focuses on mathematics education, particularly cross-cultural studies in teaching practices and teacher development. She holds a Ph.D. (2000) and M.A. (1996) in Mathematics Education from the University of Texas-Austin, and a B.E. (1992) in Mathematics and Science Education from National Taipei University of Education.
Her research explores comparative educational approaches, including studies on problem-posing strategies in elementary mathematics and pre-service teacher knowledge. Notable awards include a 2024 sabbatical and a 2022 Faculty Excellence Grant. Dr. Luo has led or contributed to grants addressing STEM education in rural and American Indian schools, including the NSF-funded 'RAISE STEM Leaders' initiative.
Her teaching includes courses like 'Methods: K-8 Math' and 'Educational Statistics I'. Engagement activities include serving as a referee for the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education and PME-NA conferences. She actively participates in outreach programs like the Montana Math Circle Summer Camp and Title II-funded initiatives.
