Michael Kamen is a Professor of Education at Southwestern University specializing in science and mathematics education. His scholarly work focuses on innovative pedagogical approaches for elementary STEM instruction, with particular emphasis on play-based learning methodologies and teacher development.
Dr. Kamen's research program centers on several interconnected domains:
- Science and mathematics education for elementary teachers
- Play-based learning approaches in STEM contexts
- Lesson study and collaborative professional development models
- Vygotskian theoretical frameworks applied to science education
- Teacher identity formation and development
- Problem-based approaches to mathematics instruction
His recent scholarship (2024-2025) demonstrates continued innovation in elementary STEM education, particularly through his collaborative work with Debra Plowman at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Their 'Ian Quiry' case study series examines the challenges faced by prospective elementary STEM teachers through publications like 'Math is a 4-Letter Word' (Spring 2025) and 'Playful Approaches for Learning Math' (March 2025). These works explore how choice, joy, and wonder can transform mathematics education in elementary settings.
Dr. Kamen maintains an active scholarly presence through international conference presentations, including appearances at the International Consortium for Research in Science and Mathematics Education in Valladolid, Yucatán, and The Association for the Study of Play in South Padre Island, TX. His work with student researchers like Sydney Jackson '27 demonstrates his commitment to mentoring the next generation of education scholars.
His academic journey includes a PhD in Science Education from the University of Texas at Austin (1991), an MS in Education from Bank Street College of Education (1984), and a BA in Elementary Education from SUNY Stony Brook (1977). At Southwestern University, he continues to shape educational practice through his research, teaching, and professional collaborations.
