Federica Muzzarelli is a Full Professor of History of Photography at the Department of Arts, University of Bologna (Rimini branch). She serves as Director of the Organisational Unit (UOS) Rimini of the Department of the Arts and Coordinator of the Photography Art Feminism Research Centre. As Principal Investigator of the 2022–25 PRIN Project on Feminist Italian Photography, she leads research on gender politics and visual culture. She co-edits the series Fashion, Media and Culture (Bloomsbury) and holds editorial roles in journals like Pianob. Arti e culture visive and ZoneModa Journal.
Her research focuses on photography’s intersections with feminism, modernism, and visual culture. Key themes include feminist photographic practices, 19th-century photographic origins, and gender performance in art. She has coordinated national and international projects, including collaborations with institutions like the Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna (Rome) and the Fashion Research Italy Foundation.
Muzzarelli teaches courses on photographic history and visual culture at the University of Bologna and has directed academic programs such as the Master’s in Design and Technology for Fashion Communication. She actively participates in conferences worldwide, addressing topics like feminist photography, celebrity imagery, and the history of women photographers. Her recent publications include Photography and Modern Icons (2023) and Fotografia e femminismo tra 800 e 900 (2024).
Her work bridges academia and public engagement, as seen in exhibitions curated with institutions like MAXXI L’Aquila and the Fondazione Sabe per l’Arte in Ravenna. She advocates for interdisciplinary research and has advised on regional policies for fashion innovation in Emilia-Romagna.
