Farhad Alavi is a PhD candidate and tutor in the Philosophy Department at the University of Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, actively contributing to undergraduate education through tutorial instruction.
His teaching responsibilities include:
- Introduction to History of Philosophy I: Plato, Aristotle, Avicenna
- Introduction to History of Philosophy II: Descartes, Berkeley, Cavendish, and non-western traditions

- Mind, matter and language
Alavi's research centers on 18th-century philosophy with deep specialization in Kant and Hume. Current work investigates Hume's multi-layered account of modality in arithmetic and geometry, while prior research analyzed Kant's integration of mathematics within the Transcendental Philosophy, particularly the theory of schematism. His scholarly trajectory demonstrates rigorous engagement with the intersection of historical philosophy, mathematical reasoning, and metaphysical frameworks.
Publications consistently focus on Kant's schematism, revealing a cohesive research program exploring how mathematical structures inform philosophical reasoning in German Idealism. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary philosophical methodology.
Alavi holds the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences Postgraduate PhD Scholarship. As a doctoral candidate, he does not supervise students but actively contributes to academic discourse through teaching and research.
