Evan Baden serves as a Senior Lecturer in Photography within Oregon State University's School of Visual, Performing and Design Arts (College of Liberal Arts), where he teaches courses including Beginning Digital Photography, Introduction to Studio Lighting, Advanced Lighting, Documentary Photography, and The Photographic Book. His office is located in Fairbanks Hall 322 at Oregon State's Corvallis campus.
His educational background includes:
- MFA – Columbia College Chicago – 2014
- BFA – College of Visual Arts – 2007
Baden's artistic practice centers on the American teenager and the fluid cultural landscape they inhabit, examining how adolescents embody change through mutable identities that reshape broader cultural narratives. His work deliberately provokes viewers to confront the societal implications of youth-driven transformation, utilizing photography to document identity experimentation during this pivotal life stage. This thematic focus manifests across multiple internationally exhibited bodies of work that explore vulnerability, social performance, and cultural influence among teenagers.
His major photographic series—including The Illuminati, Technically Intimate, Under the Influence, A Conversão de São Paulo, and The Taradiddle High School Yearbook Project (2014-15)—have been exhibited across Europe and the United States in prominent institutions. Baden's contributions to visual culture have been recognized through:
- Jerome Fellowship for Emerging Artists
- Stuart Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship
- Artist in Residence at Oregon College of Art and Craft
- Finalist selections for the Outwin-Boochever Portrait Competition and McKnight Fellowship
- Nominations for the Baum Award and PDN 30
His work resides in major public collections including the Walker Art Center, Milwaukee Art Museum, FOAM Amsterdam, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, while receiving coverage in TIME, The Guardian, New York Magazine, Le Monde, and DIE ZEIT. Baden maintains an active creative practice alongside his instructional role, with office hours held Mondays and Thursdays from 12:15-1:45 PM.
