Estella Tincknell

Estella Tincknell is Associate Professor in Film and Culture at the Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries, and Education (ACE), University of the West of England (UWE). She has taught at UWE for over eighteen years across Film Studies and Media and Cultural Studies, leading both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. She is an active researcher and supervisor, contributing to interdisciplinary scholarship in film, gender, aging, and popular culture.

Research Interests: Her work focuses on British film and television, gender and identity, music in cinema, and representations of aging femininity. She employs feminist and materialist critical frameworks, with a commitment to social transformation. She is a founding member of the international WAM (Women, Aging, Media) network, which has influenced UK media policy on older women.

Recent Research Trends: Her recent publications analyze masculinity in crime narratives, nostalgia in period television, biographical revisionism in Hollywood, and the cultural politics of aging women in media. These works span journals such as Celebrity Studies, Journal of British Cinema and Television, and Feminist Media Studies, reflecting a sustained engagement with representation, genre, and cultural memory.

Advising & Grants: She currently supervises PhD students on topics related to British film and television, music on screen, and aging and representation. She co-led a UWE-funded citywide research project that will result in an exhibition at Bristol City Hall and an archive at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. She welcomes new PhD applications in her areas of expertise.
