Esperanza Miyake is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Journalism, Media and Communication at the University of Strathclyde, UK. She co-leads a Scottish Universities Insight Institute (SUII)-funded project on data governance and serves on Ofcom's Making Sense of Media Research Working Group. Her research focuses on the intersection of gender, race, and digital technologies, with emphases on digital justice, algorithmic bias, and AI-driven societal impacts. She has authored/co-authored books such as *Virtual Influencers: Identity and Digitality* (2024) and *Paradoxes of Digital Disengagement* (2022). Miyake’s work addresses issues like digital health disparities, virtual influencer economies, and media representations of marginalized groups. She actively engages in public policy through roles like Chair of the Humanities EDI committee and participation in the Scottish Parliament’s Long Covid Cross-Party Group.
Her funded projects include studies on digital disconnection (British Academy/Leverhulme) and public sector data governance (SUII). Recent publications explore AI risks in healthcare and the socio-cultural dimensions of virtual influencers. Miyake’s media contributions include writing for *The New York Times* and appearances on BBC News and Radio.
