Espen Hartveit is a Professor at the Department of Biomedicine, University of Bergen. His research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission and integration in retinal microcircuits. He employs advanced techniques such as patch-clamp electrophysiology, multiphoton excitation microscopy, and computational modeling to study retinal interneurons, particularly AII amacrine cells and their role in neural signal processing.
His work spans from 1989 to 2025, with a consistent emphasis on neurotransmitter receptors, electrical synapses, and ion channel dynamics in retinal neurons. Recent studies explore HCN channels and extrasynaptic NMDA receptor activation in rod bipolar and amacrine cells.
Collaborators include Margaret Lin Veruki, Bas-Jan Zandt, and Rémi Fournel. Grants from the Research Council of Norway and EU Horizon Europe support his work. He has contributed to 15+ peer-reviewed articles, including key publications in Journal of Neuroscience and Journal of Neurophysiology.
