Oleg Krishtal is Professor and Head of the Department of Cellular Membranology at the Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology in Kyiv, Ukraine, and also serves as the Institute’s Acting Director. A full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1997) and of Academia Europaea (1990), he has spent more than five decades investigating ion channels, synaptic transmission and neuropharmacology.
Education:
- University degree in Molecular Physics (1968)
- PhD in Molecular Physics (1971)
- Doctor of Sciences (1981)
- Professor (1982)
- Corresponding Member, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1985)
- Corresponding Member, Russian Academy of Sciences (1987)
- Full Member, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1997)
- Member, Academia Europaea (1990)
Research Interests:
Prof. Krishtal’s work focuses on the biophysics of ion channels and synaptic transmission in the mammalian brain. Early studies identified proton-gated and ATP-gated channels in sensory neurons, laying the foundation for understanding purinergic signalling. Later work dissected the roles of P2X, AMPA, NMDA and GABAA receptors in hippocampal and cortical circuits, and explored how plant-derived compounds (ginkgolides, hyperforin, kava constituents) modulate these receptors. His laboratory combines patch-clamp electrophysiology with molecular pharmacology to uncover mechanisms of synaptic plasticity, neuroprotection and nociception.
Publication Trends:
Between 2000 and 2004 alone, Prof. Krishtal’s team produced >40 papers primarily in Journal of Neuroscience, European Journal of Neuroscience, Neuropharmacology and Biophysical Journal. These articles converge on three major themes: (i) P2X receptor-mediated synaptic currents and their contribution to LTP, (ii) modulation of glutamatergic and GABAergic transmission by natural products, and (iii) calcium-channel pharmacology in cerebellar and hippocampal neurons. The work bridges fundamental ion-channel biophysics to potential therapeutic applications in neuroprotection and pain.
Scientific Awards & Distinctions:
- State Prize of the USSR for Science (1983)
- Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1997)
- Member of Academia Europaea (1990)
- Corresponding Member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1985)
- Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1987)

Laboratory & Collaborations:
Prof. Krishtal heads the Department of Cellular Membranology at Bogomoletz Institute, a leading Ukrainian centre for cellular neuroscience. The lab houses patch-clamp rigs, live-cell imaging and molecular facilities, and maintains active collaborations with Kyushu University, Harvard, Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Pennsylvania, evidenced by his visiting professorships there.
