Dr. Ruth Murrell-Lagnado is an Associate Professor in Neuroscience at the School of Life Sciences, University of Sussex. She previously held a lectureship in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge from 1993 to 2015. Her academic journey began with a Pharmacology degree at University College London, followed by a PhD at Cambridge studying ion channels under Denis Haydon. She completed postdoctoral training at Oxford University with Aviva Tolkovsky and at Stanford University with Rick Aldrich.
Dr. Murrell-Lagnado's research focuses on ion channel biology, particularly the P2X purinergic receptor family. Her work investigates the structure, function, and regulation of P2X receptors, their role in lysosome function, calcium signaling, and implications in disease. She has made significant contributions to understanding how membrane cholesterol regulates P2X receptor signaling and how P2X4 receptors function within lysosomes.
Her recent publication record shows consistent output in high-impact journals, with research spanning from basic ion channel mechanisms to translational applications in cancer and neurological disorders. Her work demonstrates a progression from fundamental ion channel studies to more complex cellular and disease-related mechanisms.

Dr. Murrell-Lagnado has secured competitive research funding from major organizations including the Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust, Alzheimer's Research UK, and the European Union. Her current projects include investigating Kv2.1 channel openers for dementia applications and developing non-opioid analgesics. She has trained numerous PhD students and postdocs who have gone on to careers in pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
Her laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach combining electrophysiology, fluorescence microscopy, molecular biology, and drug discovery techniques to investigate ion channel function and regulation. The lab has particular expertise in studying P2X receptor signaling in the context of lysosomal function and cancer biology.
