Erika Ranee is a distinguished contemporary visual artist serving as the Teiger Mentor in the Arts at Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning for fall 2025. She previously held adjunct professor positions at Queens College/CUNY (2015-2022) and NYU Steinhardt School of Art and Art Professions (2007 onward), establishing herself as a significant figure in art education.
Ranee received her M.F.A. in Painting from the University of California, Berkeley (1993), B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts, New York (1991), and B.A. from Wesleyan University (1987). Her artistic practice centers on abstract painting characterized by complex layering techniques that explore the tension between digital impermanence and physical preservation. She builds paintings through intuitive visual freestyling, incorporating elements from urban environments and the natural world, with liquid conduits and synapses connecting through paint networks like biological systems.
Her recent exhibitions demonstrate a consistent trajectory of artistic development, with increasing institutional recognition. The 2025 solo exhibition 'My Saturn Return' at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery represents the culmination of her exploration of layered painting techniques, while her inclusion in the 2024 Brooklyn Museum's anniversary exhibition curated by Jeffrey Gibson marks significant institutional validation. Her work has evolved from more representational forms in the 1990s toward increasingly abstract and materially complex compositions.
