Claire Stankus is an Assistant Professor of Art at Sweet Briar College (Amherst, VA) since 2022, and previously held visiting and adjunct roles at institutions including Hollins University, Roanoke College, and the University of Connecticut. She teaches courses in drawing, painting, and mixed media, emphasizing abstract and contemporary art practices.
Education: BFA in Painting from Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY), MFA in Studio Art from the University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT). Professional experience includes roles as an Instructor of Record for painting and drawing courses, as well as gallery assistantships.
Research Interests: Her work focuses on distilling everyday visual experiences—such as cast shadows from houseplants, coincidental patterns, and domestic objects—into abstract compositions. She explores color theory, light/shadow dynamics, and material techniques (e.g., oil, mixed media) to create ambiguous yet familiar imagery. Her artistic philosophy emphasizes the value of contemporary abstract painting in evoking curiosity through minimal shapes and balanced forms.
Exhibitions: Stankus has held solo exhibitions at venues like the Vaulted Gallery (Sweet Briar College), Up Front Gallery (Lynchburg, VA), and Smoyer Gallery (Roanoke College). Group exhibitions include notable shows at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art (New Haven, CT), the Academy Center of the Arts (Lynchburg, VA), and the Painting Center (New York, NY).
Scientific Awards: Highlights include the Virginia Visual Artist Emergency Relief Fellowship (2020), Creative Research Grant (Hollins University, 2019), Joan & George Cole MFA Award (2018), and Augusta Hazard Painting Award (2012). Grants and residencies reflect her commitment to artistic innovation and community engagement.
Residencies & Professional Development: Participated in artist residencies at MASS MoCA, Vermont Studio Center, Sam & Adele Golden Foundation, and others. These residencies have influenced her exploration of color and form in abstract works.
