Eric Westman is a Professor at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, leading the Westman Neuroimaging Group since 2015. He holds roles as head of the Division for Clinical Geriatrics and acting/vice head of his department since 2017. With a background in biomedical engineering from KTH (2004) and a PhD in neurobiology from Karolinska Institutet (2009), he completed postdoctoral training at King’s College London. His research focuses on neuroimaging biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegenerative disorders, integrating MRI, PET, and CSF/blood markers to improve early diagnosis and understand disease mechanisms. Key collaborations span Swedish and international institutions.
Research interests include structural/functional MRI techniques (e.g., MRS, fMRI), machine learning in neuroimaging, and biomarker heterogeneity in dementia subtypes. His grants include Swedish Research Council funding for projects like 'Guiding dementia research towards precision medicine' and 'Park-MOVE'.
Publications emphasize Alzheimer’s subtyping, cerebrovascular interactions, and diet-cognition links. Supervised students include Moa Peter. He leads a team of over 30 researchers, advancing neuroimaging tools and clinical applications for dementia management.
