Eric Thelin is an Associate Professor at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Clinical Neuroscience, where he leads a research group focused on traumatic brain injury (TBI). His work spans translational and clinical research with emphasis on neuroinflammation, biomarkers, imaging, and neuromonitoring in acute brain injury. The research group conducts epidemiological and prospective studies at Karolinska University Hospital and collaborates extensively with both national and international partners.
Dr. Thelin's research interests center on understanding TBI mechanisms, identifying at-risk populations, and developing improved monitoring and treatment approaches. His work includes several major ongoing projects: SELECT-TBI (improved detection of bleeding on CT after mild TBI), DYNAMIC-TBI (AI prediction models for patient deterioration), LONG-TBI (long-term neurological effects following TBI), and GRAY-TBI (geriatric TBI pathophysiology). His research group collaborates with institutions including the University of Manitoba, Helsinki University Hospital, and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).
Analysis of Dr. Thelin's recent publications reveals a strong focus on multimodal monitoring in TBI, particularly cerebrovascular reactivity and intracranial pressure dynamics. His work increasingly incorporates AI and machine learning approaches for prediction modeling, while maintaining strong foundations in clinical epidemiology and biomarker research. The research spans from basic mechanisms of injury to clinical implementation of monitoring techniques.
Dr. Thelin's research is supported by multiple funding sources including the Stockholm Region, the Erling-Persson Foundation, and Strategic Research Area Neuroscience (StratNeuro). Previous funding has come from the Brain Foundation (Mattson Foundation), Swedish Society for Medical Research, and Swedish Medical Association.
