Eric Kindel is Professor of Graphic Communication at the University of Reading's Department of Typography & Graphic Communication, where he has taught since 1998. He served as Head of Department from 2015 to 2024. His research bridges graphic design history, information design, stencil work technologies, and typographic studies, with particular focus on material history and artifact analysis. He holds an MA from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design (1990) and BFA from University of Michigan (1988).
Kindel's research explores graphic production technologies through historical reconstruction and archival investigation. Key interests include:
- Stencil work evolution from 18th-century Paris to global industrial applications
- Isotype's cross-cultural implementation in postcolonial West Africa
- Hybrid graphic techniques like moiré and overprinting
- Material histories of letterforms and typographic knowledge systems
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on historical graphic techniques, with 68% analyzing pre-20th century methods and 32% examining 20th-century information design. Recent works (2022-2026) increasingly address global design histories and decolonial perspectives.
Kindel has led major research projects including the AHRC-funded 'Isotype Revisited' (2007-2011) producing exhibitions and publications, and 'Reconstructing Stencilling' recreating 17th-century techniques. He currently supervises doctoral research in graphic design history and typographic studies.
